The Highwayman - Performance Poetry

Performing The Highwayman

Watch this performance of the Highwayman:

Note how Rob Shaw keeps an even pace and a clear voice as he recites the poem.

Choose three or four verses of the Highwayman to read out loud.

Read them through several times, getting a feel for the rhythm and the words of the poem. Make sure you are reading the punctuation, pausing where appropriate.

When you feel confident, put on a performance for your family or contact another family member and show them your poem. You could film it or even do a virtual performance with a friend, reciting alternate verses or lines.

  • Read it through several times before your performance to ensure you know what you are reading
  • Look at the audience
  • Use the punctuation - think about pace, volume, clarity and expression
  • Make sure you get the rhythm right
