Lois Mailou Jones

Lois Mailou Jones was born November 3, 1905, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. and died June 9, 1998, Washington, D.C.

Lois showed a passion for drawing at a young age and her parents encouraged this interest by sending her to the High School of Practical Arts in Boston where she studied art. In 1927, Jones graduated with honors from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and continued her education at the Boston Normal School of Arts and the Designers Art School in Boston. In 1928 she became an art professor at Howard University, Washington DC.

A lot of her art reflects her travels to Africa and Haiti. She also took a year sabbatical (a years leave) from her university to move to Paris in France to study art in 1937. She felt that France offered her the freedom to explore her art.

Your Task

Using Lois Mailou Jones' work and the African patterns Powerpoint as inspiration, create a picture of your own. In school we are using oil pastels on dark paper but you could use colouring pencils or pens at home.

We'd love to see what you create so please do share your work with us via the Year 6 email. smiley
